Hours Calculator

This free hours calculator (work hours calculator) totals hours worked between a start and end time, subtracts unpaid breaks, and handles overnight shifts — useful as a time clock or time card helper.

How total work hours are calculated

Worked Minutes = (End Time − Start Time) − Break Minutes

If the end time is earlier than the start time (an overnight shift), 24 hours is added automatically before subtracting the break.

Example: Clocking in at 9:00 AM and out at 5:30 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break totals 8 hours worked (8.0 decimal hours).

Time card and payroll uses

Decimal hours are handy for payroll systems that calculate pay as rate × decimal hours. Combine with the Salary / Paycheck Calculator or Time Calculator.
