BMR Calculator

This free BMR calculator finds your Basal Metabolic Rate — the calories your body burns at complete rest. Use it alone or with our calorie / TDEE calculator for maintenance and deficit planning.

How basal metabolic rate is calculated

This metabolic rate calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, widely considered one of the most accurate BMR formulas for the general population:

Men: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5 Women: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A − 161

Where W is weight in kilograms, H is height in centimeters, and A is age in years.

Example: A 30-year-old man at 160 lb (72.6 kg) and 5'9" (175 cm) has a BMR of about 1,704 calories/day — the energy his body needs before any movement or exercise.

BMR vs. TDEE

BMR only accounts for rest; your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) adds daily activity and exercise — what you need to eat to maintain weight. Use our Calorie Calculator (TDEE) for that full picture and weight-goal targets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is basal metabolic rate (BMR)?

BMR is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest to keep vital organs running. This BMR calculator estimates it from height, weight, age, and sex.

Is BMR the same as metabolic rate or TDEE?

BMR is resting metabolic rate only. TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) includes activity and is usually higher than BMR.

Which formula does this use?

Mifflin-St Jeor, a common and accurate basal metabolic rate calculator formula for adults.
